What do we know about Bigfoot?

From over 4,000 reported sightings

This is what people generally think Bigfoot looks like (albeit, in pixel form).

He is usually described as hairy, black, muscular, and between 8 to 10 ft tall.

At least according to many of the 4,000 reports I looked through from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization database.

Founded in 1996 by Matt Moneymaker (yes, that's his real name), it is a community of Bigfoot researchers, who frequently go out into the wilderness to catch a glimpse of the mysterious Sasquatch.

"There was a community [of bigfoot researchers] and I started an organization for the community," said Moneymaker.

Moneymaker explained that he created the website so people could share information about sightings. "I knew if somebody sees [bigfoot], one of the things they would really want to do...is they want to look up to see if anybody else saw one in that area," said Moneymaker.

Moneymaker said there are now "hundreds" of members in the organization that regularly look through the incoming reports validate them with the reporters.

According to the reports, another prominent telltale sign of a bigfoot sighting are wood knocks.

Between 2014 and 2024, "knocks" and "wood knocks" were reported at least 69 times.

Bigfoot is also indicated by either guttural growls or loud screeching howls.

Howls, growls and screeches are mentioned at least 97 times.

There were also observations that were a lot less common, and not what you would expect Bigfoot to look like.

Bigfoot has been seen with red eyes.

brown hair

grey hair

blond hair

and even white hair

"It's like human hair," said Moneymaker. "We think [the colour] may be factors of age."

Moneymaker also said that there might be habitat patterns with the types of bigfoot.

"The darker the territories, the darker the bigfoots tend to be. Whereas the ones that tend to live in sunnier places, like Texas, tend to have more of that reddish brown," said Moneymaker.

He added that reddish brown bigfoots tend to have red clay dust dirt mixed in with their fur, and cream coloured bigfoots tend to be in and out of water a lot.

What else do we know?

Moneymaker explains that there are more sightings in Washington because it is a more populated state, and "it has a more sophisticated culture".

"A larger percentage of [Washington residents] believe it enough to think 'hey I should report it'.

And at least from the reports I had access to, Bigfoots are heard more than seen. Moneymaker confirms this fact.

Class A sightings are visual and Class B sightings are either at a distance of audio

Moneymaker shared with me the about the first time he encountered a bigfoot.

He said that it was 2.30am. The guy he was with shined a flashlight on two of them, and then the bigger one came and walked through the trees and came behind him.

"It was dark, so I couldn't see any detail in the face," said Moneymaker. "It was basically a silhouette but we got a silhouette of something growling at you 20 feet away," said Moneymaker.

"That was rewarding because after speaking to witnesses — and so many witnesses had described that encounter, he added. "And finally it was like 'oh my God this is happening to me."
